Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a condition that is usually most noticeable from pain around the outside of the elbow, often following strenuous activity of the muscles and tendons of the forearm. It is a relatively common musculoskeletal condition and it is most frequently diagnosed in adults between the ages of 40 and 60.

At Leeds Orthotics we provide a range of options for managing pain and supporting recovery from injury.

How can orthotics help?

Orthotic intervention can be used to support recovery of the tissues surrounding the elbow in the form of a brace or splint. Pressure is applied to the muscle bulk of the forearm, reducing forearm contraction and therefore relieving some of the stress on the inflamed tendon. Devices can be made from a wide range of materials to suit individual needs and most braces are easy to adjust for comfort.

Common problems associated with Tennis elbow

The pain from tennis elbow can inhibit movement and make it difficult to perform everyday tasks. If not rested and allowed to heal, tennis elbow can become progressively worse over time.

What might the assessment procedure involve?

An appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily experiences and activities and if you have ever suffered from tennis elbow before. Measures will be taken and following this, your orthotist will help you to decide which support, strap, brace or splint would be most suitable. You will discuss your specific aims for the treatment and any devices that require fabrication will be produced using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements. A fitting session will be arranged for when the orthosis is delivered into our clinic.

What types of orthotics might be effective?

At Leeds Orthotics, we provide access to a wide range of elbow splints and braces, straps and supports suitable for treating tennis elbow.

Depending on the severity of the condition, our orthotists will determine which orthosis will be the most effective to treat your symptoms.
