Neuroma

A neuroma is a very painful condition located in the foot, sometimes called a pinched nerve. Growth of nerve tissue can cause the formation of a sensitive lump in the tissue which can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Neuromas often form between the bones in the forefoot (Morton’s Neuroma). Irregularities in foot structure, toes being compressed together by footwear and repeated stress on the tissue can all cause a neuroma to form and also aggravate an existing nerve tumor. Individuals with biomechanical irregularities including high arched and flat feet are more likely to develop neuromas due to instabilities in the joints of the toes.

Leeds Orthotics offers access to effective treatment for pain associated with neuromas.

How can orthotics help?

A carefully placed specialist modification to the insole under the foot can help spread the metatarsals (long bones of foot), reducing the pinching and therefore painful symptoms of a neuroma. This type of orthotic insole allows for targeted loading of the underside of the foot, alleviating the symptoms of a neuroma.

Common problems associated with Neuroma

Neuromas are very painful and can become debilitating, making it difficult to walk or stand for even short periods of time. This can lead to compensatory movements elsewhere in the body or a loss of mobility.

What might the assessment procedure involve?

The first step is to arrange an appointment with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily activities and medical history. The orthotist might undertake a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at your joints and making observations of any compensatory movements that your body makes to try and relieve the painful area around a neuroma. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any insoles that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.

What types of orthotics might be effective?

The most effective treatment for managing a neuroma is a bespoke orthotic insole. This rests under the sole of the foot and allows for targeted loading during standing and walking. Carefully placed modifications can gently spread the toes and relieve pressure in localised areas around the neuroma. At Leeds Orthotics, we provide bespoke custom insoles that are produced to follow the shape of each patient’s foot. Insoles fit into most shoes and can be swapped between pairs if required.
