Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition which affects the brain and spinal cord and has a range of possible symptoms. Some of these can include difficulties with movement of the limbs and joints and with balance. Leeds Orthotics offers access to effective treatment for the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
How can orthotics help?
Instabilities caused by multiple sclerosis can be addressed by the use of orthotic devices. Some people affected by the disease find that they struggle to hold their toes up when walking, a condition that is called drop foot. This can be managed through the use of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to support the joint during gait. A knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) is a device that provides support to multiple joints in the leg. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a treatment that can be used to stimulate affected muscles and cause them to function in their usual way. Bespoke orthotic insoles fit inside the shoes and aid with balance and stability.
Common problems associated with Multiple Sclerosis
There are a number of associated difficulties that individuals with multiple sclerosis commonly suffer from. These include:
- Spasticity
- Weakness and unresponsiveness in muscles
- Joint instabilities
- Difficulties with balance
What might the assessment procedure involve?
First, an appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your typical daily activities and medical history and understand how MS affects you and your body. The orthotist might undertake a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at the affected joints. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made that addresses your specific symptoms. An orthotic device will be chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is having the desired effect and make any adjustments that are required.
