Motor Neurone Disease

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a condition that affects a person’s ability to control their muscles due to a deterioration of the nerves that transmit signals to them from the brain. At Leeds Orthotics, we offer access to a range of treatments that can support people who suffer with the disease and help manage the associated symptoms.

How can orthotics help?

Weakened muscles and joints can be supported by an orthosis. A flexible ankle foot orthosis (AFO) can provide support at the ankle joint, aid walking and prevent tripping. For more progressive cases, a rigid device can provide more support and hold the joint in a fixed position. Upper limb orthotics can be used at the hand, wrist and elbow and neck or shoulder orthosis can be used to provide targeted support.

Common problems associated with motor neurone disease

Because motor neurone disease affects the nervous system, there are a number of associated problems with the condition. These may include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Stiff or immobile joints
  • Pain and discomfort
  • General mobility difficulties

What might the assessment procedure involve?

Initially an appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your condition medical history along with details of your current daily activities and gain an understanding of how the disease affects you from do to day. Following the assessment, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and recommendations made by your orthotist about the most effective treatment. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.

What types of orthotics might be effective?

There are a number of orthotic devices which may provide effective treatment, depending on the severity of the disease. These options include:

  • Soft ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), for example the foot up or silicone ankle foot orthosis (SAFO)
  • Semi-rigid ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) such as the Turbomed or hinged devices
  • Rigid ankle foot orthoses (AFOs)
  • Lycra orthoses
  • Braces and splints for the affected joints and musculature
  • Head Up Collar
