Lower back pain

Many people suffer from pain in the lower back (lumbar region) at some point in their lives. Pain can last for an extended period of time, keep coming back or even prevent an individual from going about their daily activities. Leeds Orthotics provides access to a range of orthotic solutions that can effectively reduce pain and treat the causes.

How can orthotics help?

Back braces can be used to control motion in the lumbar region of the spine, provide support to the lower back and improve posture. Pain in the lower back can occur as a result of the alignment of the knee or ankle joints. Foot orthotics can be used to realign these joints and reduce any compensatory movements at the hip and lower back region that are responsible for the discomfort. Knee braces can be used to support the knee joint and improve the alignment of the lower limb, in turn reducing the abnormal placement of load on the lower back.

Common problems associated with lower back pain

Problems that are sometimes related to lower back pain include:

  • Sciatica
  • A slipped (prolapsed) disc
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Reduced mobility
  • Muscle weakness

What might the assessment procedure involve?

Initially, an appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your condition and daily activities to determine the most effective treatment option for you. The appointment may include a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at your joints and making observations of how your body moves. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.

What types of orthotics might be effective?

Leeds Orthotics provides access to a number of orthoses which can be used to treat lower back pain. The most effective device for an individual will vary and your orthotist will be able to advise you of the best option. Some of the devices that may be suitable include:

  • Bespoke orthotic insoles
  • Knee braces
  • Back braces.
