Leg length discrepencies

Many people have slight differences between the length of the left and right lower limbs. However if a significant difference is present, then this can lead to pathological difficulties in joint motion and muscle imbalances. Leed Orthotics offers access to the full range of leg length discrepancy solutions on the market.

How can orthotics help?

Orthotic intervention can support the alignment of the ankle, leg, knee and hip and restore symmetry to the body. This can help to reduce movements that your body may make to compensate for the difference in length of the lower limbs which can lead to pain and deformity.

Common problems associated with leg length discrepancy

There are a number of potential problems associated with a leg length discrepancy. They include:

  • Back pain
  • Leg pain
  • Pelvic obliquity (one hip higher than the other, due to a tilted pelvis)
  • Deviations of the lower back and spine (scoliosis)
  • Increased risk of lower limb injury, especially in athletes

What might the assessment procedure involve?

In the first instance, an appointment would be made for one of our orthotists to conduct an initial assessment. In the appointment, your orthotist will look at the degree of discrepancy in length between the limbs and the effect this has on the knee, ankle and hip joints and measurements will be made to allow for a device to be fabricated. You may be asked to leave the footwear that you wish to be modified. You will then return for a fitting appointment where the orthotist will ensure the modification has been successfully implemented.

What types of orthotics might be effective?

Custom orthotic insoles with an incorporated heel raise can be used to reduce the impact of discrepancies in leg length on other structures within the body. These fit into the shoe and can also be used to alleviate lower back pain in some cases. We make every effort to fit the raise inside the shoe however if there is a larger discrepancy (normally over 12mm) this may be treated using a shoe raise fitted to the outer side of the footwear. This can be discreetly combined with any normal shop bought shoe.
