Knee pain

The knee is the largest joint in the body and many people suffer knee pain at some point in their lives. Sometimes this can be a short term and manageable discomfort, but others may suffer from chronic debilitating pain.

Leeds Orthotics provide access to an extensive range of orthoses suitable for treating a wide range of conditions that contribute to knee pain.

How can orthotics help?

The knee is a joint in the body where the shin bone (Tibia) meets the thigh bone (Femur). In order to provide the range of motion required at the joint, whilst also maintaining the strength and integrity necessary to support the body there is an array of tendinous and ligamentous structures between and around these bones. Orthoses can be used to provide support and relief following injury to:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
  • Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
  • Patella instability
  • Unicompartmental Osteoarthritis (medial or lateral)
  • Menisci, including meniscus tears.

Any of these ligaments or tendons can be damaged by injury due to sporting activities or from movements during gait. Knee braces and sleeves aim to provide support to the knee. Some restrict motion whilst others provide assistance with certain movements at the joint.

Common problems associated with Knee pain

Knee pain is a generic term to describe the symptoms of a wide range of conditions. Knee braces can be used to provide pain relief, support and assist in rehabilitation for conditions including:

  • Patella tendon injuries
  • Instabilities of ligaments
  • Loss of cartilage
  • Muscular weakness
  • Postoperative care
  • Trauma from sporting injury
  • Sprains

What might the assessment procedure involve?

Initially, an appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted at one of our clinics. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily experiences and activities and possibly your medical history. The orthotist will undertake a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at your affected knee as well as the ankle and hip joints and making observations of how your body moves a single unit. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.
