Hip pain
Many patients seek treatment for pain in the hips. It is a common complaint and can be caused by a wide range of underlying conditions. This can be a short term and manageable discomfort, but also a source of chronic debilitating pain.
Leeds Orthotics provides access to a range of effective treatments for pain in the hip.
How can orthotics help?
Hip orthoses aim to provide relief to targeted regions of the hip in order to offload and reduce stress in these areas. They realign the legs and can engage the core muscles needed to hold correct posture. Arthritis is one of the most common underlying conditions that can cause pain and stiffness in the joint, and there are specialised orthoses that restrict motion at the hip joint in order to reduce pain.
Common problems associated with hip pain
Hip braces can be used for the treatment for a variety of conditions including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Hip dysplasia
- Stroke
- Cerebral palsy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Trauma from sporting injury or falls
- Dislocations
What might the assessment procedure involve?
In the first instance, an appointment would be made with an orthotist in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily activities and your medical history. The orthotist will undertake a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at your affected joints and making observations of how your body moves a single unit. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.
What types of orthotics might be effective?
Hip orthoses can be used to aid recovery from hip fractures and dislocations and provide hip and pelvic stability. Braces can also be used to reduce pain in early signs of hip Osteoarthritis. These braces have a series of straps that can reduce stress on the affected part of the hip joint and provide targeted loading to other areas around the joint. Hip braces used by Leeds Orthotics include:
- Hip abduction braces
- Unloader hip braces
- DMO shorts
Custom orthotic insoles can be a very effective way to treat hip pain by adjusting posture in the lower limbs and feet. They provide relief in some areas and targeted loading in others in order to achieve the desired outcome.
