Flat foot
Flat foot (sometimes called a fallen arch) is a term used to describe the case where the arch of the foot presses flat against the ground and is either very slight or not noticeable at all.
Common problems associated with flat foot
The foot is a complex structure within the body, and the arch plays an important role in foot function and the distribution of body weight through the feet and legs. If the arch is low or not present, this can increase stresses and strains through other structures and tissues in the body and sometimes result in compensatory movements. Irregular foot function can lead to pathology which can cause pain in individuals. Issues that commonly arise as a result of flat foot include knee pain, shin pain and lower back pain, usually due to limited shock absorption in the foot due to the abnormal shape.
How can orthotics help?
Bespoke orthotic insoles can be used to support the arch of the foot or to offload tendons which may be damaged or under stress. Bespoke orthotic insoles can be used as a preventative measure for those with flat feet and reduce the chance of injury. Orthotic insoles can realign the foot, reducing pain and increasing mobility.
What might the assessment procedure involve?
Typically an appointment would be made with an orthotist, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily experiences and activities and possibly your medical history. The orthotist might undertake a gait examination and watch you walk, paying attention to movements at your joints and making observations of how your whole body moves. Following this, your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.
What types of orthotics might be effective?
Bespoke orthotic insole
Bespoke orthotics are specifically designed and manufactured to provide a very accurate fit. Bespoke orthotics allow for the greatest scope when designing the insoles to achieve the optimum outcome. Bespoke insoles can be made from many different types of materials. They provide different levels of flexibility and thickness with or without soft top covers depending on your needs.
How bad can it get?
Flat feet caused by weak or damaged tendons and musculature in the feet and lower legs can become progressively worse over time. Constant forces and strains through these tissues sometimes prevent them from recovering. Flat feet can cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort, in all joints of the legs and lower back limiting activity for individuals.
