Arthritis

Arthritis is a common condition that causes inflammation and pain in a joint. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Both of these types of arthritis can have a huge impact upon a person’s quality of life, making everyday activities difficult. Arthritis can affect people of any age but is most common in adults over the age of 45, with osteoarthritis being more common in individuals with a family history of the condition.

Leeds Orthotics provides clients with arthritis orthotics to help maximise function function and decrease pain.

Common problems associated with arthritis

Arthritis is a disease which affects joints and often leads to difficulties moving and can have a very negative impact upon an individual’s life. Joints can become swollen, deformed and the effects of the condition can vary greatly from day to day. In some cases pain can make it difficult to perform simple tasks. Reduced mobility due to pain or stiffness is common.

How can orthotics help?

A variety of splints and braces can be used for the affected joints to provide support and make movement easier. Restricting and supporting movement about a joint can help reduce pain and prevent further progression of the disease.

What types of orthotic might be effective?

Types of orthotics effective for arthritis include:

  • Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), rigid or soft.
  • Bespoke orthotic insoles
  • Specialist footwear
  • Knee braces or splints
  • Upper limb braces and supports
  • Thumb supports

Ankle foot orthoses

Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) can be used to inhibit or assist motion at the ankle joint, depending on the most effective method of treatment for each individual. Some devices are softer and more flexible where others are more rigid offering a greater degree of control. Specific devices are chosen based on individual requirements.

Functional foot orthoses and bespoke orthotic insoles

Functional foot orthoses are a type of orthotic insole that directly alter the function of the foot. As a consequence, this also improves the movements of the knee and hip joints and can reduce pain and increase mobility. The insoles can be fitted inside existing footwear or specialist footwear depending on individual requirements.

Braces, splints and supports

Leeds Orthotics offer access to a wide range of splints and braces that can be used to support joints and musculature in any area of the body. Braces and splints provide targeted support and help to reduce or eliminate the pain felt in joints as a result of arthritis.

What does an orthotics assessment involve for somone with arthritis?

In the first instance an appointment would be made with one of our orthotists, in which a full initial assessment would be conducted. Your orthotist will ask you questions about your daily experiences and activities and possibly your medical history. The orthotist will examine the affected joint(s) and assess range of motion as well as examining any movements which cause discomfort. All required measurements will be taken and your treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. Any devices that are required will be fabricated using materials chosen specifically to meet your requirements and then a fitting session arranged. All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that your treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.
