How do you wear an upper limb orthosis?
Some upper limb orthoses such as a lycra sleeve or elbow orthosis can be worn directly against the skin whereas others are worn over a layer of clothing. Some orthoses cover larger areas of the body and work across multiple joints where others target smaller regions.
Elbow orthoses
Elbow orthoses are available in a variety of styles from sleeves or bands that provide support to fractures, contractures or range of motion orthoses which restrict motion at specific locations. They are typically worn around the joint and extend slightly onto the forearm and upper arm.

Thumb orthoses usually attach around the wrist and extend over the thumb joints requiring support.
What is the process for a patient to receive an upper limb orthosis?
An initial appointment is made for one of our orthotists to undertake an assessment. They will work with you to identify the type of orthosis which will be most beneficial for you. You will also discuss your goals and aims for treatment which will help select the most appropriate orthotic device. Measurements will be taken and used to ensure the orthosis fits well. You will then return to the clinic for a fitting appointment where your orthotist will ensure that the device fits as intended and has the desired effect. You will be shown how to wear the device correctly and how to remove and care for it before leaving the clinic. After you have been using your orthosis for a period of time a review appointment will be scheduled where you and your orthotist will be able to assess how your treatment is progressing and if any changes need to be made to your treatment plan.
How long will I need to wear the orthosis?
The length of time a patient will need to wear an orthosis for will depend on the reason for requiring the device in the first place. Sometimes orthoses are used to aid recovery following muscle injury or trauma and are required for a shorter period of time, whereas some patients wear an orthosis daily for their entire lives. Other conditions are best managed by wearing the orthosis for specific activities as required.
