Who would benefit from specialised footwear?

There are many reasons that people wear specialised footwear, some of these include:

  • Feet which do not fit standard shoes due to medical conditions
  • The need for wider, deeper or larger footwear
  • Foot deformities
  • Nerve or vascular damage
  • Individuals at risk from ulceration, such as diabetics
  • The need to accommodate orthoses such as insoles, splints or calipers

How do you wear specialised footwear?

Specialised footwear is designed to be worn just as regular footwear would be. The only difference is that the shoe is designed to accommodate a specific foot deformity or to better support your feet.

What is the process for a patient to receive specialist footwear?

Initially, an assessment with one of our orthotists will take place to allow them to examine your feet and discuss your options with you. Measurements of your feet will be taken and impression moulds of your feet may be taken using a foam impression box (FIB) technique or using laser scanning technology. Your orthotist will discuss your aims and goals with you and ensure that the footwear is the most suitable. When the footwear has been fabricated, fitting appointments will be made as necessary where your orthotist will ensure the footwear fits correctly and achieves any desired effects.
