Spasticity management

Spasticity is a condition where the muscles in a region of the body are contracted continuously and there is an increase in muscle tone (hypertonia). This involuntary muscle activity can cause a number of difficulties for those who suffer with spasticity including pain, difficulty walking and general motor function impairment.

Leeds Orthotics works with individuals to help manage spasticity and can provide a personalised programme depending on specific needs and goals.

What conditions can spasticity management be beneficial for?

Spasticity can be the result of a number of conditions and can affect individuals to varying degrees. Some common conditions that can cause spasticity include:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Meningitis
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI)
  • Brain damage due to a lack of oxygen
  • Encephalitis
  • Adrenoleukodystrophy
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • Phenylketonuria

Who would be suitable for spasticity management treatment?

Leeds Orthotics can offer support to anyone who suffers from spasticity related difficulties. Spasticity can vary hugely in severity between individuals, with some people reporting a mild feeling of muscle tightness whilst others suffer painful debilitating muscle spasms. We can work with both adults and children to help manage spasticity and support you to meet your treatment goals.

How does spasticity management work?

Spasticity management varies significantly from person to person depending on individual needs. The aim of treatment is usually to either reduce spasticity or to make the effects more manageable. This can involve supporting areas of the body into a posture that is more beneficial, or providing assistance to musculature to help control motions.

Leeds Orthotics benefits from being part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), meaning that we are able to provide comprehensive support for managing spasticity.

What is the process for a patient to benefit from spasticity management?

The effects of spasticity can vary greatly between individuals, so the very first step for any patient is to have a full assessment with one of our orthotists who will advise the most suitable treatment plan for you. Our team will explore your options with you and ensure that you feel comfortable to make an informed decision about your treatment moving forwards.

How long will I need to continue with treatment?

Spasticity management is typically an ongoing process and the effects can change over time. Close management of spasticity is important to ensure the most appropriate intervention is in place.
